Alan III the Black of was born about 1095. Alan III the Black of's father was Stephen comes Britanniae and his mother was Hawise de Guincamp. His paternal grandfather was Eudon comes Britanniae and his paternal grandmother is Agnes de Nantes de Cornouaille. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Henry I, Geoffrey II Boterel, Agnorie Penthievre, Olive, Maud of and Theophania. He was the second oldest of the seven children.
