From an obituary newspaper clipping (possibly the Fargo Forum): " Last
rites were held Monday for a pioneer resident of Hunter Mr. Jonas Gustav
Knudtson, 84, who passed away at his home last Thursday afternoon. Short
services were held at the home at 1 o'clock preceding services at the
First Lutheran Church at 2. Rev. R. E. Ylvisaker officiated and Mrs.
Emery Johnson, soloist, accompanied by Miss Myrtle Moen, organist, sand,
Nearer My God to Thee, Rock of Ages and Abide With Me. Pallbearers were:
Harry Rasmussen, W. L. Moen, Ed Moen, Ralph Thompson, Emery Johnson and
Merland Carr. The body was laid to rest in the Hunter cemetery. Jonas
Gustav Knudtson was born in Morris, Grant County, Illinois, on February
27, 1969. The same year they moved to Decorah, Iowa, Here his father
passed away, three years later. In 1877, his mother married again to Mr.
Martin Anderson. A year or so later they emigrated to North Dakota,
homesteading on land about 3 miles north of Blanchard. He attended
Bruflat Academy, Portland, N. Dak. and a business school in Minneapolis.
He was an apprentice in Skrivseth Photo Studio in Hillsboro. Later, he
was employed in Calmer Grocery Store in Fargo, soon moving to Hunter
where he went into business with Mr. Charlie Tubbs in 1892, and a year
after, they dissolved partnership. He then operated a Men's Clothing and
Grocery Store until 1902 and built a larger store and then a General
Merchandise Store. This business was sold in 1920. He was married to
Karen Marie Bjerke on June 19, 1892 and in 1896 built his home in which
they have lived since. To this union five children were born, two
preceding him in death. A daughter Effie Mae passed away in 1897 and a
son, Dr. Herbert M. Knudtson who passed away January 30, 1953. A half
sister, Amelia Anderson Seim passed away many years ago. Surviving are
his wife, Mrs. Knudtson, three daughers, Mrs. W.C.Fisk (Ruby) of Hunter,
Mrs. B.G.Schroeder (Gladys), Carrington, Mrs. L.W.Kuhn (Joyce), Chicago,
Illinois; 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Mr. Knudtson was a
member of the First Lutheran Church. He also was a member of Masonic and
I.O.O.F. Lodges. Out-of-town relatives attending the services, were: Mr.
and Mrs. L.W. Kuhn, Chicago, Ill,; Mr. and Mrs. B.R.Schroeder,
Carrington; Mr. and Mrs. Garry Fisk, Larry and Cindy, Brookings, S.Dak.;
Mr. and Mrs. Dellwyn Fisk, Neal and Deneice, and Mrs. Selmer Paulson of
Fargo; Mr. and Mrs. J.T.Murdock, Redwood Falls, Minn.' Oscar Bjerke of
Finley; Mrs. Glenn Swenson, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Torgerson, Mr. and Mrs. J.
Milton Myhre, Mr. and Mrs. Hjalmer Bjerke, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert
Swenson, all of Kindred; Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Swim and Mrs. Hannah Seim of
Blanchard; Mrs. Louise Knudtson and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Moller of Fergus
Falls, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Tryhus of Grand Forks; Reul Truhus and
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Holland, Mayville; and Mr. and Mrs. Elo Wold and Mr.
