Walter the Elder was born in Lougueville, Normandy, France. Walter the Elder's father was Osborn I de Bolbec and his mother is Wevia (Duceline) de Crepon. His maternal grandparents were Herbastus the Dane de Crepon and Gunhild Olafsdatter of Sweden. He had two brothers and a sister, named Godfrey, Osborn II and Josceline. He had six half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Turchetil de Harcourt, Gilbert, Herbrand, Ilbert, Richard, Humphrey de Harcourt, Josseline, Joscelina and Daughter.
