Randolph was born about 1172 in Ravensworth, Yorkshire, England. Randolph's father was Henry FitzHervey and his mother was Alice de Greystoke. His paternal grandfather was Hervey of Ravensworth; his maternal grandparents are Ralph (Ranulf) de Greystoke and Amabel de Baliol. He had a sister named Agatha FitzHervey.
