Rhodri ap Hywel's father was Hywel Dda the Good ap Cadell of Gwynedd and his mother was Elen verch Llywarch of Dyfed. His paternal grandfather was Cadell ap Rhodri Mawr and his paternal grandmother is Rheingar of Deheubarth; his maternal grandfather was Llywarch ap Hyfaidd of Dyfed. He had five brothers and a sister, named Owaine ap Hywel, Dynwal ap Hywel, Edwin ap Hywel, Cynan ap Hywel, Einion ap Hywel and Angharad verch Hywel. He is the second oldest of the seven children.-
