His paternal grandfather was Cadell ap Rhodri Mawr and his paternal grandmother is Rheingar of Deheubarth; his maternal grandfather was Llywarch ap Hyfaidd of Dyfed. He had five brothers and a sister, named Owaine ap Hywel, Rhodri ap Hywel, Dynwal ap Hywel, Edwin ap Hywel, Cynan ap Hywel and Angharad verch Hywel. He is the youngest of the seven children.-
