Jesse, in the Old Testament, father of King David and grandson of Boaz and Ruth. Jesse lived in Bethlehem, in Judah, and was a farmer and breeder of sheep. The phrase "son of Jesse" seems to have been used in a derogatory sense by Saul (I Samuel 20:27, 30; 22:7, 8), but the prophet Isaiah and later writers associated the most sublime Messianic hopes with the "root of Jesse" (Isaiah 11:1, 10).
