Membyr "Ddu" was born in 1114. Membyr "Ddu"'s father was Gruffydd ap Cynan and his mother was Angharad verch Owain. His paternal grandparents are Cynan ap Iago and Rhanullt O'Olaf; his maternal grandfather was Owain ap Edwin and his maternal grandmother is Morwyl verch Ednywain. He had four brothers and nine sisters, named Owain " Gwynedd", Cadwaladr, Cadwallon, Tudwal, Rhanullt, Gwenllian, Elen, Gwenllian, Merinedd, Susanna, Rhael, Annes and Margred. He is the fifth youngest of the fourteen children. He has a half-sister named Susannah.
