His paternal grandfather was Jan Cornelissen Van Hoorn and his paternal grandmother is Hillegonda Joris; his maternal grandfather was Rutgert Wouters and his maternal grandmother is Styntje Jacobs. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Dirck, Gerrit, Janeke, John, Rutger, Styntje Christina Joris, Aefje, Hillegonda, Mary and Vrientie.
