William James was born on March 9th, 1816 in Brampton, Derbyshire, England. William James' father was William Shelton and his mother was Catherine Hartley. His paternal grandparents are George Shelton and Alice; his maternal grandfather was Samuel Hartley and his maternal grandmother is Elizabeth. He had four brothers and three sisters, named George, John, Isaac, Samuel, Hannah, Elizabeth and Sarah. He was the third oldest of the eight children.
