Jehoram of Judah was son and successor of Jehoshaphat. He married Athalia, daughter of Ahab, and thus became the son-in-law of Jehoram of Israel. Upon Jehoram’s accession to the throne in 849 bc he slew his brothers, to whom his father had given a number of fortified cities and many other gifts. His reign was troubled: The nation of Edom revolted against Judah, regaining its independence, and the Philistines and the Arabians attacked Judah and ransacked Jerusalem, taking many captives (see 2 Chronicles 21). All of Jehoram's sons, including Ahaziah, who succeeded him on the throne in 842, were killed by Jehu, king of Israel (see 2 Kings 9:27; 10:13-14).
