Mary Ann B. was born on September 15th, 1848 in , Guilford, N.c.. Mary Ann B.'s father was Joshua STARR and her mother was Caroline Rebecca PHIPPS. Her paternal grandfather was Abner STARR and her paternal grandmother is Mary (Polly) WEITZEL. She had five brothers and three sisters, named B. F., Washington Monroe, John Abner, James F., Robert A., Nancy J., Catherine R. Caroline and Alice Ann. She was the oldest of the nine children.
