Mary was born about 1552 in Ofsamlesburyhall, Blackburn, Lancashire, England. Mary's father was John SOUTHWORTH and her mother is Mary ASHETON GOULAND. Her paternal grandfather was Thomas SOUTHWORTH and her paternal grandmother is Margery BUTLER; her maternal grandfather was Richard ASHTON and her maternal grandmother is Anne STRICKLAND. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, Richard, Christopher, Thomas, Gilbert, Leonard, Stanley, Jane, Margaret and Anne. She was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
