Richard I "Lionheart" was born on September 13th, 1157 in Beaumont Palace, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. Richard I "Lionheart"'s father was Henry II Plantagenet and his mother was Elbeonore Of AQUITAINE. His paternal grandparents were Geoffrey V PLANTAGENET and Matilda (Maud) Of GERMANY; his maternal grandparents were Guillaume X Duke Of AQUITAINE and Elbeanor De CHATELLERAULT. He had nine brothers and three sisters, named William, Henry III, Geoffrey, Philip, John "Lackland", Richard II, Gregory, Gregory, William, Matilda, Eleanor and Joanna. He had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, named William, William "Longespee", Mary , of Champagne, Marie Princess Of, Alice and Alix Princess Of. Richard I Coeur de Lion, King of England -
Reigned 1189-1199. Prisoner in Germany 1192-1194. A hero of Medieval legends spent all but 6 months of his reign abroad. He became Duke of Aquitaine in 1168 and of Poiters in 1172. He joined the 3rd crusade in 1189 and conquered Messina and Cyprus before arriving in the Holy Land. His victory at Arsuf gained Joppa (1191). On his way home he was capture in Austria and was only released by Emperor Henry VI after payment of an enourmous ransom (1194). He returned briefly to England but died in France.
Richard was born in 1157. He was married to Berengaria of Navarre. Richard is famed for being an absent King of England, and is commonly known as Richard the Lionheart.
As soon as he was crowned, he raised enough money for his voyages and set off for the Holy Land. He left the ruling of England to his brother, John. A year after he had set off on his voyage, he was no nearer the Holy Land than Sicily, and it was here he was introduced by his mother, Eleanor, to princess Berengaria of Navarre. On his mother's request Richard agreed to marry the princess, as the region of Navarre was a useful territory straddling the Pyrenees. He took the Princess with him on his travels, and Berengaria was crowned Queen of England when they put ashore in Cyprus. Richard was
homosexually inclined and saw very little of his Queen. The Third Crusade was a total failure, while Richard was trying to get the land for the Christians, in some brave, foolhardy attempt, his brother, John, was claiming the throne of England. Richard disbanded his siege of Jerusalem, in what was one of the most costly exercises to England before the wars of the twentieth century.
Richard had made many enemies. One of them was the Duke of Austria, which he angered and publicly ridiculed by trampling his banner into the mud at the siege of Acre. This was to be a
costly error, as on his homeward voyage, Richard was shipwrecked in the Adriatic and decided
to go through the Duke's lands on the easiest and most direct route home to England.
He was captured and held hostage. England had to pay Ð100,000 for his ransom ( a similar figure in modern day money would perhaps reach Ð12 million ). Ð100,000 was a third of the Gross
National Product. Special taxes had to be collected from the people of the country, and this took
over a year. Richard popped home briefly and then went to Normandy, never returning to England.
In his absence the country was run efficiently by Hubert Walter, Archbishop of Canterbury.
Richard died from an arrow wound, whilst trying to claim an intricate Roman relic for himself in Chalus. He congratulated the bowman on his skill, and had him brought to his death bed for a pardon.
