Walter was born about 1124. Walter's father was Miles fitz Walter and his mother was Sibyl De Neufmarche. His paternal grandparents were Walter FitzRoger and Berthe; his maternal grandparents were Bernard de Neufmarche and Nesta ferch Osborn. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Roger Fitz, Henry Fitz, William Fitz, Mahel Fitz, Margaret, Bertha, Mabel and Lucy fitz. He was the second oldest of the nine children.
