Richard was born on December 30th, 1857.  Richard's father was George Thomson and his mother was Elizabeth Milne.  His paternal grandparents were George Alexander Thomson and Mary Harvey. He had nine brothers and two sisters, named George Alexander II, William I, Thomas, Alexander I, Alexander II, William II, Frank, Harry, Edward, Flora Harvey and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
