Richard was born in Winchester Castle, Hampshire, England.  Richard's father was John Lackland and his mother was Lady Isabella Taillefer d'Angoulême.  His paternal grandparents were Henry II Curtmantle Plantagenet and Duchess of Aquitaine Eläeonore; his maternal grandparents were Aymer Taillefer and Alice de Courtenay. He had a brother and three sisters, named Henry III, Joan, Isabella 'Elizabeth' and Eleanor. He had fourteen half-brothers and eight half-sisters, named Osbert Gifford, Oliver FitzRoy, Geofrey FitzRoy, Richard, Henry, John FitzJohn, Eudo, Ivo, Hugh, Henry, Guy, I, Sir William, Aymer, Joanna, Isabel "la Blanche", Joanna, Matilda, Alice, Isabelle, Marguerite and Agatha.  He died on April 2nd, 1272 in Newark Castle, Notthinghamshire, England.

‌Richard and Isabella (Marshall) were married in a religious ceremony on March 30th, 1231 in Fawley Church, Buckingham, England.  They had three sons and a daughter, named Henry, Nicholas, John and Isabel.

‌Richard and Sancha were married in a religious ceremony on November 23rd, 1243 in Westminster Abbey, Middlesex, England.  They had three sons named Richard, Edward and Richard.
