His paternal grandparents were Gruffydd ap Cynan and Angharad Verch Owain; his maternal grandparents were Llywarche ap Trahaern and Dyddgu verch Idnerth. He had five brothers and a sister, named Iorwerth Drwyndwn ap, Owain ap, Dafydd ap, Maelgwn ap, Rhodri ap and Angarad verch.
