Walter was born about 1105 in Paisley Abbey, Renfrew, Scotland. Walter's father was Alan FitzFlaald and his mother was Ameline de Hesdin. His paternal grandparents were Fledaldus (Flaald) and Filia Rex Scotiae; his maternal grandparents were Ernulf De Hesding and Emmaline De Normandy. He had three brothers named Simon, Jordan and William. He was the second oldest of the four children. He died in 1177.-
