Ralph was born in 1685 in Middlesex County,Virginia. Ralph's father was Peter Shelton and his mother was Susanna Jaxon. His paternal grandparents were James Shelton and Eleanor West. He had two brothers and a sister, named William, Peter and Susannah. He had three half-brothers named Thomas, Zebulon and Henry.-
