Klaas was born on October 29th, 1842 in Nieuwkoop,Zuid Holland,Netherland.  Klaas' father was Pieter SCHELLINGERHOUT and his mother was Lijdia Van HARINGEN.  His paternal grandparents were Gijsbert SCHELLINGERHOUT and Marrigje PIJPER; his maternal grandparents were Klaas Van HARINGEN and Jannetje Souze FYSTERMAN. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Gysbert, Jan, Marrigje and Jansje.  He was the third oldest of the five children. He had six half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Gijsbert, Gerrit, Arie, Pieter, Bastiaan, Hendrik, Anna, Stijntje, Steintje, Johanna and Elisabeth.
