Jacob was born on October 15th, 1808 in Nieuwkoop,Zuid Holland,Netherland and his baptism took place there on October 23rd, 1808.  Jacob's father was Gijsbert SCHELLINGERHOUT and his mother was Marrigje PIJPER.  His paternal grandparents were Pieter SCHELLINGERHOUT and Pieternel HOGERVECHT; his maternal grandparents were Thomas PIJPER and Marrigje VERLOOW. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Pieter, Gysbert, Pieter, Pieter, Jacob, Pietje, Marrigje and Willemijntje.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
