James E. was born in 1841 in Warrick County,Indiana. James E.'s father was Joseph Powers and his mother was Mrs. Cynthia Yarber. His paternal grandparents were John D. Powers and Sarah Blackford. He had four brothers and a sister, named John S., Mark, Infant, Jacob and Mariah Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William and Mary.-
