Martin was born about 1812 in Wilkes County,North Carolina. Martin's father was John McQueary and his mother was Nancy Shepherd. His paternal grandparents were John Macquarrie and Miranda Stout; his maternal grandparents were John James Shepherd Sr. and Sarah J.-------. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Morgan, Andrew, John, James, Sarah (Sally), Lucy and Elizabeth. He was the youngest of the eight children.-
