George Ernest was born on February 5th, 1868 in of Denmark House,Armidale,New South Wales,Australia. George Ernest's father was Henry Kemmis and his mother was Annie Smith. His paternal grandparents were Henry Kemmis and Mary Dodd. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Henry, William Albert, Robert John Francis, Frederick James, Alice Anne and Emily Louise Avon.
