His paternal grandparents were Arthur Herbert and Helena Townsend. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Charles, Anne, Elizabeth, Mary, Jane, Frances, Penelope Antonia, Letitia and Helen. He had two half-sisters named Anne and Emily.
