William's father was Geoffrey , Earl of Essex FitzPiers and his mother was Aveline de Clare. His paternal grandparents were Piers de Lutegareshale and Maud , Lady of Costow de Mandeville. He had a brother and two sisters, named John , Lord Kirtling Justiciar, Cecily and Hawise. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named William de Mandeville Earl of, Geoffrey , Earl of Essex, Henry and Maude FitzGeoffrey , Cts de Essex.
