Gilbert was born in 1183 in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England. Gilbert's father was Earl Richard de Clare and his mother was Countess Amicia FitzRobert. His paternal grandparents were Earl of Hertford Roger de Clare and Maud de St Hilary; his maternal grandparents were Earl William FitzRobert and Hawise deBeaumont. He had two sisters named Aveline and Matilda. He was the youngest of the three children. He died at the age of 47 on October 25th, 1230 in Perres-Guirrec, Brittany, France.General Notes
Sir Gilbert de Clare, 5th Earl of Hereford and Earl of Gloucester, Suretyfor the Magna Charta, married Isabel de Mareschal or Marshall, one of thedaughters of William de Mareschal, Earl of Pembroke, Protector ofEngland. Sir Gilbert de Clare died Oct. 25, 1230.
