Robert was born about 1050 in Montgomery, Montgomery, Wales.  Robert's father was Roger De Montgomery Earl of Shrewsbury and his mother was Mabel Talvas Heiress Of Belleme. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Hugues De, Robert II (De Belleme) De, Roger II De, Phillip, Arnulph De, Maude De, Emma, Sibyl and Mabel.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.
