George was born on September 29th, 1823 in New Freistadt,Baden,Strasburg,Germany. George's father was John George Stephan and his mother was Elizabeth Winter. His paternal grandfather was George STEPHAN. He had four brothers and a sister, named John, Frederick (Fred), Karl, Louis and Elizabeth (Lizzie). He died at the age of 74 on August 7th, 1898 in Shelbyville,Shelby,IN. He was buried in City Cemetery,Shelbyville,IN.General Notes
Soldier in 1840's for 5 years in German (Prussian) army. Immigrated 1849 at age 26. On 21Mar 1865, enrolled Lafayette, IN for 1 yr service in Union army private Company B., 156th Regiment, Indian Infantry Volunteers. Records show he was 41 hazel eyes, brown hair, 5'4", dark complexion, Germany native, Occupaton Cooper (barrel maker). Mustered out 4Aug 1865 Stevenson station, VA. Granted a war pension 23 July1890 of $12 month by reasons of chronic diarreaha at age 66. He lived with his daughters after his second wife died in 1872. He lived at 103 John St. in Shelbyville.

George and Mary Anna (Emma) were married in a religious ceremony in 1861. They had a son and a daughter, named Marvitt and Mina E. (Minnie).
