James A's father was William Napier and his mother was Mary Gibson Kirkpatrick. His maternal grandparents were William Kirkpatrick and Barbara R Campbell. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William Jr, John R, George, Alexander J, Rachel, Mary Jane and Elizabeth. He died in New York. He was buried in Maplegrove Cemetery,Cattaraugus Co,New York.
