Haakon was born in 1070 in Orkney Islands,Scotland.1 Haakon's father was Paul I Thorfinsson Jarl of Orkney and his mother was Ragnhild Haakonsdoittir. His paternal grandparents were Thorfinn II Sigurdsson and Ingibiorg Finnsdoittir; his maternal grandparents were Haakon Ivarssaon and Ragnild Magnusdottir. He had a brother and five sisters, named Brynjolf, Thora, Ingrid, Herbiorg, Ragnhild and UNKNOWN. He was the oldest of the seven children.
