His paternal grandparents were Emanuel Chitwood and Eliza Jane Cox. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Michael Emanuel, Theodocia, Isaac Walter, Joseph Leader, John, James Corbitt, David, Bertha, Lavina Mae and Martha E..
