Ruth's father was Thomas Thurston and her mother was Mehitable Tripp. Her maternal grandparents were Peleg Tripp and Anne Sisson. She had seven brothers and four sisters, named Edward, Thomas, John, Jonathan, Nathaniel, Peleg, Samuel, Anne, Elizabeth, Mary and Mehitable.
