Henry's father was Henry Clay and his mother was Mary Mitchell.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Clay and Hannah Wilson; his maternal grandparents were William Mitchell and Elizabeth Innes. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Charles, John, John, William Mitchell, William Mitchell, Charles, Henry, Amey, Amey and Mary.
