George Ellis Gaddy was born 15 Oct 1819. Some say he was
the son of Samuel Gaddy Sr. and grandson of Thomas and
Millison Gaddy of Anson Co.NC. About 1821 Samuel Gaddy and
family moved to Lincoln Co. Tenn. Geo. m. Sarah Reeves on
13 July 1839. About 1846 George, Sally and family moved
to Carroll Co. Ark in Long Creek TWP in Denver area. His
place was partly in Carroll Co. and Boone Co.
They had five children: Sarah died 1851, George E
married Sarah Shipman 22 Sept 1852 and they had 3 children:
Mary Francis (Frankie) 9 April 1856 Carroll Co. Ark, Martha
Ann Josephine b. 11 Aug 1859 and John Archibald b. 1862,
all born in Carroll Co.
Great grandfather was a teacher, farmer and ordained
Baptist preacher. A Captain of the Home Guard in the Civil
War. Then went to teach at Kelly school near Ash Grove MO.
As I said before, 1880 the daughter Frankie and her family
went with him and Sarah. Maybe they were there one or two
years, then returned to Carroll Co. where they lived untill
they all got on the train and moved west to Bliss Idaho.
The first word we had about our greatgrandfather was
when Floyd McNiel and his lovely wife brought the book
Behind These Ozark Hills which had a chapter devoted to
Geo. E. Gaddy.
One of his granddaughters was Josephine Ellen Mattox,
daughter of James Reddin and Frankie Gaddy Matton. My Aunt
Josie last husband was Frank Bowen a brother of my mother.
They have one daughter living at John Day, Oregon. At the
time of this writting. But she, Aunt Josie, knew Geo. E.
very well. Said he was one of the sweetest people she had
ever known. Every time he came in the house he would take
time to read the Bible. It would be a lucky person to have
his Bible from all the praise I have read. He must have
been a unforgettable, exceptional man of God.
William Ernest Mattox was about 12 years old when his
grandfather Geo. E. Gaddy passed away at Bliss Idaho. My
mother and his wife to be was born at Bellwarer Idaho about
sixty miles to the north. Her widowed father Aaron Bower
married widow Sarah Gaddy and his brother Bill Bowen m.
Frankie. They were all farmers over there. Then all seem
to get gold fever. They all came over here to Baker Co. in
the spring of 1889. They had five?? covered wagon loads.
Uncle Arch had mountain fevor form a tick bite. They had
to lay over in a small railroad town for three weeks before
they were able to go on to the gold fields. They were
several years too late. They went to several mine camps.
Frankie died 1900, Susonville Oregon, Grant Co. and was
buried there. Ghost town now.
Will E. Mattox m. Mary A Bowen 20 Sept 1899, Baker
City Oregon. Marys father Aaron Bowen was killed in a
accident. After a couple of years, Will and Mary Mattox
started farming again. They had six children; James M.,
Mable O., Ernest J., Donald W., Lenord G. and Dorthy W.
The oldest b. 1900. The other two years later, except
Dorthy 6 years between. 1916 Father went back to Norman
Okla. to visit his father for a month.
Will died of a heart attack 21 Feb 1922 and is buried
at Mt. Hope, Baker City Oregon. Mary A. Mattox died 13
April 1966 and is burried Mt. Hope Baker City, Oregon.
James Gene Mattox living Baker City Oregon. Dorthy Mattox
Strong living Baker City Oregon at the time of this
writting 3-18-1990.
