His paternal grandparents were Jonathan Tipton and Sarah Pearce; his maternal grandparents were Mordecai Price and Mary M. Parsons. He had three brothers and a sister, named Mordecai, Thomas, William, Jr. and Sarah. He had two half-brothers named Joseph and Walter.
