Poppo was born about 1100 in Lorsch, Starkenburg, Hesse-Darmstadt.¹ Poppo's father was Count Gotwald of Henneberg I and his mother was Lukard von Hohenberg. His paternal grandparents were Count Poppo of henneberg I and Princess Hildegard of Thuringia; his maternal grandparents were Berthold von Hohenberg and <Unknown>. He had four brothers and a sister, named Gebhard, Gunther, Berthold, Otto and Hildegard. He was the oldest of the six children.
