Ellen was born in 1857 in Rudgwick, Sussex and her baptism took place there on March 2nd, 1856.1 2  Ellen's father was Thomas Steere and her mother was Elizabeth Holland. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Annie, Kate and Mary.  She was the oldest of the six children.
