Thomas was born in 1828 and his baptism took place on April 4th, 1828 in Petworth.1  Thomas' father was Thomas Steer and his mother was Elizabeth. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, William, Henry, Charlotte, Jane, Fanny and Louisa.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
