Robert was born in 1870 in Paddington, Middlesex and his baptism took place on August 14th, 1870 in Petworth.1 2  Robert's father was Edward James Steer and his mother was Harriet.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Smith. He had three brothers and a sister, named Arthur, Edward, William and Ethel.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
