Lydia was born in 1885 in Kirdford, Sussex.¹

Lydia's father was James Steer and her mother was Elizabeth. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Steer and Mary Puttock. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Edward, James, Elizabeth, Ruth and Annie. She was the second youngest of the six children.
