Jane was born about 1832 in Bigbury Devon.1   Jane's father was Thomas Steer and her mother was Mary Hill.  Her paternal grandparents were Jasper Stear and Sarah Bartlet. She had a brother and five sisters, named Thomas, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Ann and Susan.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
