Jane was born in 1870 in Capel, Surrey.1  Jane's father was Eli Steer and her mother was Mary Worsfold.  Her paternal grandparents were James Steer and Rebecca Miram. She had four brothers and five sisters, named William, Ernest, Herbert, Henry, Mary, Ann, Alice, Kate and Edith. She had an adopted sister named Julia.
