Ernest was born in 1885 in Leatherhead Surrey.1  Ernest's father was Eli Steer and his mother was Mary Worsfold.  His paternal grandparents were James Steer and Rebecca Miram. He had three brothers and six sisters, named William, Herbert, Henry, Mary, Ann, Jane, Alice, Kate and Edith. He had an adopted sister named Julia.
