James was born in 1802 and his baptism took place in 1802 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.1   James' father was Robert Steer and his mother was Elizabeth Tanner. He had a brother and two sisters, named William, Hannah and Rhoda.  He was the youngest of the four children.
