Jabez was born in 1876 in Fittleworth Sussex.1  Jabez's father was Mordecai Steer and his mother was Matilda Stone.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Steer and Ann Mariner. He had three brothers and a sister, named Charles, Mordecai, Albert and Matilda.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
