Emily was born in 1886 in Shipley, Sussex.1  Emily's father was Moses Steer and her mother was Jane Francis. She had a brother and seven sisters, named James, Frances, Emma, Beatrice, J, Ethel, Olive and Kathleen.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.
