Eliza was born in 1847 in Wisborough Green, Sussex and her baptism took place there on January 17th, 1847.1 2  Eliza's father was Henry Steer and her mother was Hannah Knight.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Steer and Lydia Etherton. She had three brothers and two sisters, named George, Zebedee, Henry, Louisa and Virginia.  She was the youngest of the six children.
