James was born about 1845 in Sussex.1   James' father was Alfred STEERE and his mother was Emma Tester.  His paternal grandparents are <Unknown> and <Unknown>; his maternal grandfather is <Unknown> and his maternal grandmother was Elizabeth TESTER. He had two sisters named Ellen and Emily.  He was the oldest of the three children.
